Specialists in Electric Hot Water Cylinders
No hot water when you open the tap? It can be a frustrating issue. While you might immediately suspect a problem with the water heater, other less common causes might be at play. We’ve got a few tips to help you narrow it down.
One lesser-known cause for a lack of hot water is a malfunctioning thermostat. The thermostat controls the temperature of the water in your cylinder. If it fails, the heater may only warm the water or may not heat it at all. Visually inspect the thermostat, but make sure to test its functionality, too.
Another potential culprit is a clogged dip tube. The dip tube directs incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank, where it heats up. Over time, sediment can accumulate and block the tube, leading to poor heating efficiency or no hot water. This problem is not always obvious and will require a professional inspection from a plumber.
Your home’s water pressure can also affect the availability of hot water. If the pressure drops significantly, it might disrupt the hot water flow, making it seem like the heater isn’t working. This can happen for several reasons, including leaks in the plumbing, a faulty pressure regulator, or an issue with the mains.
A less common issue involves the heating element in an electric water heater. Water heaters typically have two elements—a lower and an upper element. If one fails, it makes the entire cylinder less efficient. Diagnosing this problem usually requires a multimeter to test the elements and determine if they need replacement.
If you have hard water, sediment buildup can cause problems. Over time, minerals from hard water settle at the bottom of the tank, forming a layer of sediment. This can insulate the water from the heating elements, reducing efficiency and leading to inadequate hot water. Flushing the tank periodically can help prevent this issue.
Another potential issue is a problem with the water heater’s power supply. If the circuit breaker trips or a fuse blows, the water heater may stop working. This issue might seem straightforward, but it can sometimes be overlooked.
In cases where you’ve just moved into a home or had a new cylinder installed, the issue might be a cross-connection in your plumbing system. This occurs when the hot and cold water lines mix, leading to lukewarm or cold water where hot water should be. Identifying and fixing cross-connections usually requires a thorough plumbing inspection.
Don’t struggle with a lack of hot water. If you open the hot tap and nothing comes out, or the water is lukewarm or even cold, it’s time to call in the professionals. At EasyFlow, our G3-qualified engineers are capable of handling any issue your unvented cylinder might be experiencing. We’re also qualified to handle your annual inspections and maintenance.
