Hard Water vs. Your Warranty and the Hidden Cost of Limescale in the UK
Unvented cylinders offer plenty of advantages over older vented models. They’ve become the most popular solution in the UK because they deliver mains-pressure hot water to every tap in the home, which means better showers and easier washing up. However, what many UK residents don’t know about is limescale from hard water. It can affect your unvented cylinder’s performance, but it may also shorten (or void) your warranty.
Why Hard Water Causes Problems So Quickly
Hard water contains lots of dissolved minerals (mainly calcium and magnesium). When the cylinder heats your water, those minerals settle out and form limescale. If you’ve ever noticed a white, crumbly build-up on faucets or a cloudy residue on surfaces after washing up, you’ve seen limescale.
Inside a hot water system, limescale acts like an insulating blanket. It settles over immersion heaters and begins building up in the cylinder itself. The Energy Institute notes that a 1 mm layer of limescale can make your system work harder to heat the same amount of water.
The Risk to Your Warranty
Here’s the bit many people miss: warranties often have conditions. It’s common for manufacturers to require annual servicing to keep warranty coverage valid. For example, Gledhill states that to keep warranty validation, the cylinder must undergo a service each year.
And in Gledhill’s StainlessLite Plus servicing guide, warranty conditions include annual servicing and that the unit hasn’t been “subjected to scale… damage”, with the Benchmark service record kept up to date. Other manufacturers have very similar requirements (including proof of annual maintenance).
Even if your issue looks like a simple part failure, a manufacturer can ask for proof that the system has been properly maintained. If you can’t produce service records or if the issue is linked to scale-related damage, you may find yourself paying out of pocket.
What Annual Servicing Does in Hard-Water Homes
Annual service isn’t just a box-tick. It’s the chance to catch the early signs of scale and keep safety components working as intended.
EasyFlow’s annual unvented cylinder service includes testing safety valves, recharging pressure vessels, cleaning the pressure reduction valve, checking electrical connections, and providing a service certificate.
That certificate and service record can be a big asset if you ever need to make a warranty claim, especially in hard-water areas where scale build-up is more likely.
Simple Steps to Protect Yourself
Want to avoid limescale-related problems? Do the following now (before there’s a problem):
- Find your paperwork: commissioning documents, warranty registration, and the Benchmark/service record
- Set a yearly reminder: don’t let 13 or 14 months pass and hope it “still counts”
- Keep proof: invoices, certificates, and dated service notes in one folder
- Ask about scale prevention: depending on your setup, an EasyFlow engineer can advise on options that reduce limescale risk
