How to Tell If Your Hot Water Cylinder Needs Replacing

11 July 2025

Hot water cylinders don’t last forever. They’re also a big expense. So, how do you know when yours is on the way out and how do you tell the difference between impending doom and a repairable problem?

Failing hot water cylinders often gives warning signs before the issues become real trouble. Ignoring those signs can mean dealing with poor efficiency, rising bills, or even water damage in your home. The good news is that if you know what to look for, you can spot minor issues before one becomes a problem and decide whether to repair or replace the cylinder.

1. Your Hot Water Runs Out Too Quickly

If your household hasn’t changed, but you’re suddenly running out of hot water faster than usual, your cylinder might be losing its efficiency. This could be due to:

  • Limescale buildup on the heating element

  • Internal corrosion reducing capacity

  • A faulty thermostat not heating to the set temperature

While some of these issues can be fixed or even prevented through annual maintenance, they’re often signs the cylinder is nearing the end of its life.

2. Strange Noises

Hot water cylinders shouldn’t gurgle, hiss, or pop. If you’re hearing strange noises when yours heats up, especially banging or crackling, it might be:

  • Sediment or limescale boiling off the element

  • Pressure issues

  • Internal deterioration

Sediment and pressure issues can often be repaired. However, over time, these noises can signal increased wear and reduced efficiency.

3. Rusty or Discoloured Water

If your hot water comes out rusty or brown, and your cold taps are clear, the issue is likely inside your cylinder. This often indicates corrosion on the inside lining, which means the tank could be compromised or leaking soon.

Modern stainless-steel cylinders are more resistant to this, but older steel or copper ones are vulnerable. That’s particularly true of models without a sacrificial anode or protective coating.

4. Visible Leaks or Damp Patches

It might start as just a drip, but even a slow leak can damage your floor, walls, or insulation over time. Common warning signs include:

  • Water around the base

  • Soft floorboards nearby

  • Persistent damp or musty smells

A leaking cylinder is typically not repairable. In these cases, replacement is usually the safest and most cost-effective option.

5. Age and Efficiency

Most hot water cylinders last 10 to 15 years, depending on material, usage, and maintenance. If yours is older than that and you’re noticing other issues (like rising energy bills or temperature inconsistency), it might be time to upgrade.

Newer unvented cylinders offer better insulation, faster heat-up times, and lower heat loss, meaning real savings on your monthly bills.

Is It Time to Replace Your Water Cylinder?

Knowing when to replace your hot water cylinder isn’t always easy to do, but if you’re hearing strange noises, noticing rust, or constantly running out of hot water, those are signs it might be time for a new one.

Replacing an old, inefficient cylinder might seem like a big investment, but in many cases, it quickly pays for itself in energy savings, better performance, and peace of mind.
