Comparing Mechanical, Digital, and Smart Programmers for Unvented Water Heaters

6 August 2024

Water is more than a utility. It’s a public resource. The same is true of the energy we use to heat it. Controlling our water and energy usage is important for sustainable living but can also help us control our costs and make each pound stretch a little further. A water heater programmer can make all the difference, but you’ll need to choose the right type for your budget and usage needs.

The 3 Types of Water Heater Timers

Sold on the idea of a timer for your unvented cylinder? Brilliant. Now it’s time to talk types. You’ll find three different models commonly used throughout the UK, including:

Mechanical Timers: These are the simplest to use and the most affordable to purchase. They’re cost-effective, but pretty limited when it comes to programming different routines and don’t offer any sort of advanced functions.

Digital Timers: Digital timers are perhaps the most common today. They’re electronic and can be programmed using buttons right on the timer itself. Depending on the model you choose, these can offer advanced routine programming capabilities.

Smart Timers: Smart timers can offer very advanced programming options, hold multiple routines, and enable remote control from your smartphone. They can also tie into a home automation system/smart home system.

Which System Is Right for You?

With a little more information about what each type of water heater timer offers, let’s dig deeper into their pros and cons so you can make an informed decision.

1. Mechanical Programmers

Mechanical programmers are simple and traditional. You operate them using a dial or a switch. Easy to use and affordable, they’re also reliable and very durable. However, they’re less precise than other options, so they may not save you as much money in the end. If your routine changes, you’ll also need to manually adjust the timer. Finally, you don’t have many options in terms of function beyond on and off.

2. Digital Programmers

Digital programmers are the next step up from mechanical ones. They use an LCD screen to display information and let you program the system with buttons. They’re more precise than mechanical timers, and you can program different routines for each day or by week. They’re more expensive than mechanical timers, however, and you’ll need either a dedicated power source or replaceable batteries to keep it on.

3. Smart Timers

The most advanced option on the market, smart timers are just that – intelligent timers that offer the utmost in terms of flexibility and customisation. They can be controlled right from your smartphone, so there’s no more need for manual programming or updates. And because they tie into smart home systems, they become part of your network. However, they’re the most expensive option, and access will depend on your Wi-Fi signal. They also require periodic software updates.

Not sure which of the three water heater timers is right for you? Consider a few factors in your decision:

  • How much do you want to spend?
  • How averse are you to manual programming?
  • Do you have a smart home system/home automation system or plan to install one?
  • Do you want or need advanced control of your water heater?
