Cost-of-Living Audit: Is Your Water Heater Setting Your Money on Fire?
Do you feel like you’re spending more and more money on bills every year? It’s not an illusion. Those costs keep creeping higher. While there’s little you can do about things like the cost of electricity, there are ways you can recoup some of your money. One of the more surprising ways is to reduce the amount of standing heat loss from your hot water cylinder.
What Is Standing Heat Loss?
Standing heat loss is nothing more than the heat your cylinder leaks into the airing cupboard (or loft, or utility room, or whatever other space it’s installed in) while you’re not using any hot water. If your cylinder’s always on, it’s always using energy, and with today’s unit rates, it adds up.
The Difference Insulation Makes
A lot has changed in cylinder insulation over the last 15 years. Older cylinders, especially those that only had a loose-fitting jacket, usually lose far more heat each day than modern, factory-insulated cylinders.
The UK’s SAP methodology (used for energy calculations) includes default “loss factors” for cylinders based on insulation thickness. For example, SAP 10.1 lists a 25mm loose cylinder jacket loss factor of 0.0516 kWh/litre/day, while a 50mm factory-insulated cylinder is 0.0152 kWh/litre/day.
Let’s take a normal family-sized cylinder.
Older cylinder (approx. 200L, loose 25mm jacket):
Using SAP’s default factors (and the standard SAP temperature factor for cylinders), you can end up in the ballpark of ~5.2 kWh/day of standing losses.
Modern cylinder (e.g., Megaflo Eco Direct 210L):
The Megaflo Eco Direct technical data lists an insulation thickness of 60mm and a standing heat loss of 1.42 kWh/24h for the 210L model.
What that means in money terms:

- If your cylinder is heated electrically (immersion), cutting standing losses by about 3.8 kWh/day could save around £384/year at 27.69p/kWh.
- If it’s heated by gas via a system boiler, the same heat loss is still waste, but it’s closer to £82/year at 5.93p/kWh.
(Your actual numbers depend on cylinder size, set temperature, location, and how well pipework is insulated, but the direction of travel is clear: better insulation = less money leaking away.)
Timers and Programmers
Even with a well-insulated cylinder, you can still do more. If your system heats water all day “just in case”, you’re effectively paying for more standby time than you need.
The Energy Saving Trust recommends that homes with a boiler and hot water cylinder have a programmer and cylinder thermostat (set up as a boiler interlock), so the boiler doesn’t run when heat isn’t needed.
